Während seines aufenthaltes im Saint-Paul-de-Mausole psychiatrische klinik in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence , van gogh wendet sich der umliegenden landschaft zu, um seine geographie als künstler zu bereichern . er malt und zeichnet unermüdlich neue provenzalische motive : zypressen , olivenhaine und hügel . das niedrige alpengebiet, das sich hinter den krankenhausgebäuden erhebt, bietet vincent die möglichkeit, das raue massiv sowie den nahe gelegenen steinbruch zu bemalen .
